Gas, charcoal, pellet, kamado — the fuel type you choose shapes everything about how you cook outdoors. This comparison breaks down the real trade-offs so you can pick what fits your lifestyle, not just the latest trend.

Gas Grills

Best for: Weeknight dinners, speed, convenience, new grillers.

Gas grills heat up in under 10 minutes and give you precise temperature control with the turn of a knob. They're forgiving, easy to clean, and work year-round. The trade-off: you won't get the deep smoky flavor that charcoal and pellet deliver.

Charcoal & Kamado Grills

Best for: Flavor purists, weekend cooks, high-heat searing.

Charcoal burns hotter than gas, imparts authentic smoky flavor, and forces you to slow down and engage with the cook. Kamado-style grills (like Kamado Joe) retain heat incredibly well — they can sear steaks at 700°F or hold 225°F for a 12-hour brisket. The trade-off: longer setup time and learning curve.

Pellet Grills

Best for: Low-and-slow BBQ, set-it-and-forget-it cooks, competition pitmasters.

Pellet grills burn compressed wood pellets and use a thermostat-controlled auger to maintain precise temperatures. They deliver real wood smoke flavor with gas-grill-level convenience. Great for brisket, ribs, and pulled pork. The trade-off: most pellet grills cap out around 500°F — not ideal for high-heat searing.

Our Recommendation

If you grill 2-3 times a week and value convenience, get a premium gas grill. If you cook on weekends and care about flavor above all else, get a kamado. If you're serious about BBQ and want to smoke briskets and pork shoulders, get a pellet grill. Many of our customers eventually own two — a gas grill for weeknights, a kamado or pellet for weekends.
