Primo Ceramic Grills is the only major kamado brand manufactured in the United States. That fact alone matters less than what it means in practice — decades of consistent ceramic quality, a warranty that actually gets honored, and a US-based parts pipeline for a grill that's meant to last 20-plus years. This guide covers what Primo is, how the product line breaks down, and how to pick the right size for what you actually cook.
What is a Primo grill?
Primo builds ceramic kamado grills — thick-walled dome cookers descended from Japanese mushikamado rice steamers, reengineered as slow-and-low charcoal grills. The ceramic body traps heat and moisture, which is why a kamado gives you tender brisket at 225°F and clean 750°F sears from the same grill on the same day.
Every Primo is manufactured in Tucker, Georgia. Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, and most other kamado brands are made overseas — that's not a knock on any of them, it's a factual distinction that matters if US manufacturing, US warranty support, and US parts availability are part of the buying calculus for you.
The Primo Oval — why the shape matters
Every other kamado on the market is round. Primo grills are oval. That's not a style choice — it's the entire product thesis. The oval shape lets you build a fire on one half of the grill and leave the other half empty. On a round kamado, direct heat radiates everywhere; you sear on one side and the other side sits at 400°F+. On an Oval, one side sears while the other side stays at true indirect-cooking temperatures. You can reverse-sear a ribeye and slow-cook chicken thighs at the same time without swapping accessories.
The Primo product line
- Oval JR 200 — smallest Oval. Fits couples or as a second grill for the deck.
- Oval LG 300 — the volume seller. Handles a small brisket, two racks of ribs, weeknight dinner for a family of four.
- Oval XL 400 — room for a whole packer brisket or two whole chickens with sides.
- Oval XXL 400 — Primo's flagship. Same 400-series footprint but taller — fits taller cuts, more capacity for entertaining.
- Kamado Round — Primo also makes a round kamado. It's a great grill but doesn't have the two-zone advantage. Choose the Round only if you don't care about two-zone cooking and want a lower price of entry.
Cooking-surface area and weight vary by model — check the spec sheet on the individual product page for the exact numbers you'll need to plan for delivery and install.
How to pick a Primo size
Kamado shoppers over-buy more often than under-buy. If you're the only one cooking most nights and you occasionally host 4-6 people, the LG 300 is plenty. Move up to the XL 400 or XXL 400 if you regularly cook whole briskets, whole hogs, or feed groups of 10+.
All Primo Ovals accept the same accessories (heat deflector plates, cast iron grates, rotisserie kits) — you're not locked out of anything by starting smaller. The Oval JR 200 is the exception; it's genuinely a compact grill and some accessories don't fit it.
What we get asked most about Primo
- Warranty: 20 years on ceramic parts, lifetime on cast iron, 5 years on metal bands and hinges.
- Fuel: Lump charcoal only. Never briquettes, never wood chunks as the primary fuel. This is intentional — the ceramic thermal mass + lump gives kamado cooking its clean flavor.
- Assembly: Every Primo ships partially assembled. A single person can set up the JR 200; the larger models really are a two-person job.
- Cart or stand: The Primo All-In-One (AIO) cart is designed to bolt directly to any Oval and includes fold-down side shelves. Standalone tables also work but the AIO is built for the specific weight and heat profile.
Primo vs Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe
The three names most people compare Primo to. In one sentence each:
- Primo — US-made, oval-shape two-zone cooking, 20-year ceramic warranty.
- Big Green Egg — original US-marketed kamado, round shape, huge accessory ecosystem, made overseas.
- Kamado Joe — round shape, Divide & Conquer multi-level cooking system, made overseas, best-in-class accessory design.
The right answer depends on whether the oval two-zone matters to you. If yes, Primo is the only choice. If no, Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe are both excellent — pick on price, accessory ecosystem, and dealer support.
